Laser hair removal works through a process called selective photothermolysis — the laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is selectively absorbed by melanin (the pigment) in the hair shaft. This light energy converts to heat, which travels down the hair shaft and permanently damages the hair follicle — disabling its ability to produce new hair.
Because hair grows in cycles (anagen/growth, catagen/transition, and telogen/resting phases), laser hair removal is only effective during the active growth phase — when the hair is attached to the follicle. This is why multiple sessions are required: to catch each follicle during its anagen phase. After a full series, most patients achieve 80–90% permanent hair reduction with periodic maintenance sessions for any remaining follicles.
